You are in one of the most important Etruscan cities, on the banks of the Fiora River, now a beautiful historical park just a few kilometers away from the Orbetello Family Camping Village. The Cryptoporticus welcomes you with its underground passages where ancient fountains still flow, while the mosaics, baths and other interesting finds will transport you back to the days of the Roman Empire.
Walk along the paths and dirt tracks of Monte Argentario towards the hill known as Poggio Fondoni, where the holm oak wood form a tunnel. Climb towards the Capo d’Uomo and watch the panorama change: the garrigue overlooking the turquoise sea, while in the background you see the islands of Giannutri, Giglio and Montecristo. The ruins of the tower dominate a 360° landscape of terraces, ancient farmhouses and the Tuscan Archipelago.
Sunsets are all wonderful, but there is something truly special about those seen from Monte Argentario. You can drive up to the Monumental Cross on Monte Argentario, in the late afternoon, and enjoy the breath-taking panoramas over the Orbetello Lagoon and much of the Maremma area. Then go over to the other side: the panorama extending over the Tuscan Archipelago, with its imposing islands of Giglio, Giannutri, Elba and Montecristo, creates an idyllic vision. Now enjoy a sunset aperitif on Monte Argentario.
Treat yourself to this mini cruise and go discover the islands of Giannutri and Giglio. Departure is by reserved bus from the Orbetello Family Camping Village at around 8.45 am. At Porto Santo Stefano you embark on the motorship “Revenge”. The first stop is on Island of Giannutri, where a seafood lunch awaits you, then the Island of Giglio. Return to the campsite is scheduled for around 7:00 pm.
Everyone knows Florence, the cradle of culture and the Renaissance. It hosts some of the most famous monuments and works of art in the world.
But as well as the magnificent churches and famous museums, paintings and sculptures, there are a number of hidden treasures in Florence that you probably don't know: for example the reversed balcony in Borgo Ognissanti, or Dante and Beatrice’s Church where the poet met his beloved for the first time, the remains of a Roman theater located under Palazzo Vecchio, the petrified head, better known as La Berta in the wall of the bell tower in Via de’ Cerretani, the wonderful Boboli Gardens inside Palazzo Pitti… just to name a few.
If you want to dedicate a whole day to the discovery of myths, ancient legends, anecdotes and stories from the past, Florence is just over two hours away by car from the Orbetello Family Camping Village.
Just a two-hour drive from the Orbetello Family Camping Village is the famous city of Pisa.
Piazza del Duomo, more popularly known as Piazza dei Miracoli, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 and forms the artistic and tourist center of the city: the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the evocative Campo Santo (cemetery)… and perhaps you didn’t know that the Leaning Tower is actually the bell tower of the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta.
But have you ever tried climbing the sloping stairs to the top, where you find the 7 bells inspired by musical notes? It is a very strange feeling. The monument built in 1173 is inclined due to a structural failure of the ground, but its “fault” has for centuries made it famous throughout the world. Visits to the Tower must be booked in advance.
Everyone is familiar with Chianti thanks to its wine, which has literally traveled the world. Chianti however refers to a geographical area in the center of Tuscany that is quite unique.
The hilly landscapes creates a harmony of colours and shapes that inspire moments of inner peace. A good glass of Chianti Classico with a slice of Pecorino di Pienza or, why not, a fantastic plate of Pici Cacio and Pepe (cheese and pepper) are a culinary experience you simply have to try! Greve in Chianti can be reached in less than two hours from the Orbetello Family Camping Village, following natural hillsides that will amaze you at every turn with their colours, scents and typical landscapes.
